10 JULY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EYEWEAR PUBLISHING has secured the rights to publish a book of quizzes from University Challenge stars and internet phenomena Eric Monkman and Bobby Seagull. Eyewear acquired rights from agent Robert Gwyn Palmer, in the face of fierce competition from several major publishers.
You probably know them best from March’s electrifying University Challenge semi-final, which saw two of the series’ most memorable contestants, dapper Bobby Seagull and fan favourite Eric Monkman, go head-to-head in a Cambridge derby between Emmanuel and Wolfson colleges.
In this new quiz book, however, Monkman and Seagull are on the same team – their brainpower is printed on the page for the first time. The Ultimate Challenge: Match Your Minds Against the World's Most Popular Quizzers will contain a variety of quiz questions, connections, tricks and tests; from puzzles to pop quizzes to picture rounds. Monkman and Seagull, who have a combined Twitter following of over 21K, host events as a duo and have previously written quizzes for The Guardian, are well-versed in suiting their style to their audience, and will be including questions aimed at a range of levels, from the devilish to the plain dumb (relatively speaking).
After a bidding war between major and independent publishers, it represented a rare victory for small presses when Monkman and Seagull chose to go with Eyewear. Eyewear acquired rights to publish simultaneously in the UK, Ireland and USA, and the book will be available worldwide from Eyewear’s website and transatlantic distributors.
The book will be published in November, to coincide with the run-up to the festive season and, of course, University Challenge, Christmas 2017. Though the book is ideally suited to the gift market, Monkman and Seagull are planning various live events and media appearances to promote the book well into 2018.
Eric Monkman, 29, is from Oakville, Ontario, and did his Master's in Economics at Wolfson College, Cambridge. Christened ‘Canada’s unlikely heartthrob’ by The Independent, so much was he adored on the show that he spawned the hashtag #Monkmania, and T-shirts with his face on them.
Bobby Seagull (named after his father’s favourite book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach), 32, was born in Newham, London. Bobby has a Master’s in Education and Maths from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He has worked as a financial markets trader at Lehman Brothers, and qualified as a chartered accountant at PwC, before co-founding OxFizz, an educational social enterprise.
Of his newfound celebrity, Bobby has said: “When I was a kid, University Challenge would come on, and I’d only know one or two answers. I’d hide behind the sofa in awe of the students who seemed to know everything”
Director of Eyewear, Todd Swift, says ‘These two young men are not only two of the brightest minds of their generation, they are also an extraordinary double act. Bouncing off each other on the page as they did in front of the camera, they never lose any of the self-deprecating natural charm which makes up their appeal to an audience tired of manufactured media personalities. With Eyewear’s attention to detail and our focus on quality editing and production, this book will endure as a classic of its genre.’
